2020 Toscano Bianco 'Martiena'

88

The 2020 Bianco Martiena, a kitchen sink blend of indigenous and international white varieties, shows hints of pineapple and zests of lemon, before giving way to sweet white flowers. This is soft and enveloping with a sweet and sour display of melon and orchard fruits, both rich yet also energetic. This finishes remarkably fresh with potent tropical and citrus tones, and also a good amount of energy.

2020 Rosso di Montepulciano

90

The 2020 Rosso di Montepulciano lifts up with dusty black cherries and roses with underpinnings of underbrush and leather. Here I’m finding a ripe display of wild berries offset by saline-minerality and zesty citrus-driven acidity. There’s so much to like here, tapering off concentrated yet fresh, teeming with lively acidity; and it closes off with notes of red licorice and spice. The 2020 vintage imparted this Rosso with unexpected depths.

2019 Rosso di Montepulciano

88

The 2019 Rosso di Montepulciano is a very pretty wine. Crushed flowers, sweet red cherry and tobacco accents all grace this lithe, fruity Rosso. Drink it over the next few years.

2015 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva 'Bossona'

91

Dei’s 2015 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Bossona is loaded with black cherry, chocolate, spice, licorice and dried herbs. I must admit this is a style I don’t really get, as sweetness from the oak and a search for unctuousness dominate over more typically varietal Sangiovese flavors. Moreover, the 2015 comes across as being on a relatively fast aging curve, as the oak has introduced some slightly oxidative notes. I would prefer to drink the 2015 over the next handful of years. This is the better of two bottles I tasted.

2013 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva 'Bossona'

92

The 2013 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva Bossona is a dense, powerful wine. Brooding and muscular in the glass, the Bossona speaks with authority. Black cherry, gravel, smoke and licorice add to an impression of gravitas. I wonder if more finesse might be possible here. Even so, the 2013 Bossona is terrific. The 2013 spent two years in 10 and 20HL casks.

2018 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

91

The perfumed and elegant 2018 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano wafts up with a vivid display of crushed raspberry and spice box complemented by mentholated herbs of hints of smoke. There are depths of silky texture here and an opulent wave of floral-laced wild berries and sweet inner spice. Notes of sour citrus, lavender, round tannins and residual acids mingle through the lightly structured finale. This is so elegant.

2017 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

93

The 2017 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano packs a serious punch, yet retains plenty of Sangiovese character. Wild red cherry, tobacco, cedar, mint, licorice and spice all burst from the glass. The combination of richness and vibrancy makes for a compelling Vino Nobile that can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring.

Palladino

2015 Barolo Riserva 'San Bernardo'

91

The 2015 Barolo Riserva San Bernardo has aromas of wild strawberry compote, crushed roses, vanilla, and dried autumn leaves. The palate is tension-driven, with tart cherry pit, dried orange peel, and warming clove spice. Its structure is forward and angular, with gripping tannins that persist through a long finish. Hold 3-5 years and drink 2024-2040.

2017 Barolo 'Ornato'

93

Ornato is on a fully south facing slope located in the southern end of the commune of Serralunga d’Alba. Aromatically, the 2017 Barolo Ornato is ripe with tobacco, dried black cherry, tar, and licorice. There is full structure and generous fruit up front noted by dried apricot, cranberry compote, and orange zest, with sturdy and ripe tannins. My personal favorite within the lineup of the Palladino 2017s, I like it for its balance and classic appeal. Drink 2024-2042.

Palladino

2017 Barolo 'Parafada'

91

The 2017 Barolo Parafada is highly aromatic with luxurious aromas of cedar, vanilla, wild strawberry leather, and baking spice. The palate is fresh with pomegranate, tobacco leaf, cola, and stony earth as well as building tannic grip. This shows off a more modern aesthetic in the lineup with regard to its oak presence and will need some time to integrate. Cellar for 3-6 years and drink 2025-2040.

Palladino

2017 Barolo 'Serralunga'

92

The 2017 Barolo Del Comune Di Serralunga D'Alba’s more volatile aromas of tar quickly blow off to reveal well-integrated and floral notes of classic ripe cherry, clove and star anise. The palate is pure and inviting, with dried raspberry fruit, black tea, and dried apricot. There is an openness to the structure reflective of the vintage, with fully ripe tannins and approachable fruit. Allow for a decant if opening early, though there is no need to be shy with its enjoyment now. Drink 2022-2038.
