Monviert

2016 Schioppettino

92

This is wildly expressive in aromatic terms at this point in its development, with some striking, borderline barnyard, old cask notes that never step over the line into seeming dirty or bretty or — as the French would say, animal. Nearly a light-bodied wine (in a world that has ever fewer of them), this is so packed with character that the overall effect is uncanny — like 3 liters of wine in a 750 ml bottle, but not because of anything heavy. A wild ride, and a fun one!

Verdicchio Spumante Brut 'Primo' NV

90

The NV Brut Spumante Verdicchio Primo is sweetly seductive with a bouquet that shows peach preserves, exotic spice and vanilla cream. This washes across the palate with silken bubbles giving way to ripe orchard fruits and pretty inner florals. The Brut Primo lingers long yet maintains remarkable freshness. While a bit heady at times, I can't deny how much of a pleasure this is to taste.

The NV Extra Dry Rose Prosecco Naonis is floral yet understated in the glass. The splashes across the palate with a bead of silken bubbles propelled by vibrant acidity as a burst of tropical melon and sweet spice makes an appearance toward the close. It finishes a bit short with a hint of licorice that lingers.

Naonis

Brut Prosecco

88

The NV Brut Prosecco Naonis wafts up with a spicy blend of fresh ginger, tart apple and dried flowers. It's softly textured with a surprising burst of inner sweetness that betrays its savory bouquet as soothing bubbles give way to hints of candied citrus. Hints of sour melon and spice linger through the medium-length finale. This is interesting but needs to be more cohesive.

A burst of lime zest, crushed green apple and spicy grapefruit introduces the NV Prosecco Ca' del Sarto. It's silky in feel with racy acidity that enlivens its sour melon fruit as tropical inner florals form toward the close. This leaves kiwi and young mango nuances behind while finishing pleasantly fresh.

Merotto

2020 Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore Brut 'Graziano Merotto'

91

The 2020 Brut Prosecco Superiore Graziano Merotto lifts from the glass with a smoky mix of crushed green apples offset by a hint of gingery spice. This washes across the palate with a silken bead of fine bubbles, more savory than sweet, with mineral-tinged orchard fruits and pretty inner florals that form toward the close. Sour melon nuances resonate under an air of almondy custard, and the mouth waters for more. The single-vineyard Graziano Merotto hails from Rive Col San Martino.

NV Spumante Brut Rose 'Grani di Nero'

89

The NV Brut Rose Grani di Nero lifts from the glass with a savory mix of crushed rocks, wild herbs and dried strawberries. This is a well-chiseled effort, with mineral-tinged bubbles and racy acidity as a rich note of hazelnut custard adds contrast. It leaves the palate completely refreshed as hints of sweet melon and spice slowly taper off.

2020 Prosecco Superiore Dry 'La Primavera di Barbara'

89

The 2020 Dry Prosecco Superior La Primavera di Barbera is quite mineral in the glass, with crushed rocks and dusty dried flowers forming it's bouquet. This is soft and textural, with juicy acidity and hints of candied citrus that give way to an almondy richness. This leaves a pleasant inner sweetness as hints of brown spice and baked apple fade.

Antica Fratta

2018 Franciacorta 'Essence Rose'

93

The 2018 Rose Essence is coy in the glass, lifting up with a nuanced mix of white strawberries and citrus-tinged florals. It's more lively on the palate, slashing across the senses with an elegant bead of fine bubbles and ripe red berries that are perfectly offset by saline-mineral tones toward the close. A burst of inner sweetness punctuates the finale as hints of inner rose, licorice and nectarine slowly fade. A bit more bottle age may help the aromatics to evolve. Otherwise, this is already highly pleasurable. It's a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay.

While lightly structured, the 2019 is already quite giving and pleasurable today.

Cantina Sanpaolo

2021 Fiano di Avellino

92

Bright, medium-intense yellow; appealing aromas of lemon zest, magnolia and yellow apples. Medium-full with impressive concentration; excellent varietal purity, very good acidity, notable persistence and complexity. Well made, this is delicious now and should drink well for 5-7 years, perhaps another 2 or 3 years longer.

Cantina Fratelli Pardi

2018 Montefalco Sagrantino

91

The 2018 Montefalco Sagrantino is smoky and slightly herbal on the nose, with dusty violet florals complemented by nuances of clove and black cherries. It's deeply textural and soothing on the palate with an elegant wave of ripe red and black fruits which leaves a staining of silky tannins in their wake. The 2018 finishes structured yet balanced with purple-tinged inner florals and hints of plum and sweet tobacco. Well done. This may not have the power to last the ages, but it makes for a great option to drink over the medium term.

Cantina Fratelli Pardi

2018 Montefalco Sagrantino 'Sacrantino'

93

The 2018 Montefalco Sagrantino Sacrantino is darkly inward and intense with an almost rustic yet highly pleasurable mix of grilled sage, plum and cherry sauce and underbrush lifted by a hint of fresh mint. It envelopes the palate with the silkiest of textures and ripe red fruits, showing not a single hard edge, while slowly saturating the senses with a mix of spiced citrus and salty mineral tones. R=Tobacco mingles with black currants and a suggestion of cocoa as the Sagrantino finishes long, lightly structured and harmonious. What a beautiful expression of the 2018 vintage. Well done.

Cantina Fratelli Pardi

2020 Montefalco Rosso

90

The 2020 Montefalco Rosso opens slowly, yet is worth the wait, as a pretty mix of raspberry preserves, dusty rose and sweet spice fills the glass. It washes across the palate with soft textures propelled by vibrant acidity, as saline minerals slowly saturate under an air of violet inner florals. This tapers off perfumed and lightly structured, leaving nuances of sour cherry and citrus to linger on and on. The 2020, a blend of 70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino and 15% Merlot and Cabernet, will be best enjoyed alongside a meal and is an excellent introduction to the Fratelli Pardi style.

100% Piedirosso (locally known as Per' e Palummo). Bright, medium-deep purple; aromas of black plum, black raspberry and black orchid. Medium-full with excellent ripeness and a layered mid-palate. Very good acidity; round, elegant tannins noteworthy persistence; the finish offers notes of plum and a hint of anise. This is very well made that displays excellent varietal purity and a distinct savory note that adds so much pleasure to this wine. Enjoy over the next 3-6 years.

Bosco De' Medici

2021 Pompeii Bianco

91

100% Caprettone from ungrafted vines; macerated and vinified in amphorae. Bright, medium-deep yellow; aromas of lemon oil, hibiscus and passion fruit. Medium-full with appealing ripeness, this has excellent structure, very good acidity and admirable harmony; the finish offers notes of white flowers and lemon, along with a pleasing touch of minerality. The persistence is not as complete as one might expect, given the qualities of this wine, so I downgraded my score just a point, but all in all, this is a lovely, very pure, highly distinctive wine to be enjoyed over the next 5-7 years.
